‘There’s pride in walking iron’
Washington bserver Reporter – Aug 31, 2007
Not only were Mohawk Indians integral players in the World Trade Center’s construction but they were also on hand for clean-up efforts when the twin towers fell. Along with the black-and-white and color photographs in “Booming ut” the exhibit also will include a metal sculpture of the World Trade Center created by a Mohawk ironworker made with material from Ground Zero. “Booming ut” is a Mohawk phrase describing the large-scale migration of native Americans from reservations in upstate New York and Canada to find construction work in New York City according to Shawn Termin a program producer at the National Museum of the American Indian. “It was the work that was available to Indian people” said Termin who is married to a Mohawk ironworker. Hundreds of Mohawk families migrated to Brooklyn in the middle part of the 20th century for building jobs though that ebbed by the 1960s. Now many construction workers will leave reservations on Sunday nights and travel into the city for the week. They’ll sometimes share apartments with fellow ironworkers then return to the reservation on Friday nights to spend time with their families.

Today the filmmakers are shooting a scene in which the Haskell superintendent (Geer) is addressing the Indian children who have just been pulled off the reservation. The story focuses on one such Kickapoo youth (played by newcomer Winter Fox Frank) who is taken from his family and forcibly sent to Haskell under government orders to integrate into white society. After being assigned a new name and religion Frank’s character escapes and attempts to return home only. CPYRIGHT 2007 Journal-World.

A similar protest is planned for the Coors Brewing Co. corporate headquarters in Colorado. LaMere also referred to plans for future protests at the Nebraska Capitol and protests involving American Indian leaders during the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August 2008.
