(AP) — The leader of a group that claims to be an American Indian tribe was sentenced Friday to five years in prison in an immigration fraud case that ensnared about 12000 people who believed tribal membership gave them U. Malcolm Webber also known as Grand Chief Thunderbird IV must serve three years’ probation after release from federal prison and forfeit more than $377000 seized last year by agents who raided the Kaweah Indian Nation offices in Wichita. Webber 70 of Bel Aire was convicted in August on six felony charges arising from the sale of memberships.

In October Bradford was asked how proud he was of his American Indian heritage. The question posed during a postgame interview in Waco Texas seemed to catch him off guard. “Uh very” he answered. Bradford acknowledges he’s not as involved with the Cherokees “as I probably should be. I’m aware of my heritage and my culture but I’m really not involved.

The proposed National American Indian Scholars Program scheduled to launch in fall 2009 is the first national scholarship or recognition program of its kind focused on American Indian students. UNM is working in partnership with the American College Testing program or ACT. The program would be open to students whose ACT score is within the 95th percentile for their region and would admit approximately five to 10 students each year. Special Assistant to the President for American Indian Affairs Pamela Agoyo first suggested the program five years ago and she worked with Associate Vice President Terry Babbitt to begin planning over the past two years.

In a memorandum being sent to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Overseas Friends of the BJP (OFBJP) demand that the UN warn Islamabad of “severe punishment” unless it immediately curbs the “nefarious” activities of terrorists so that they do not strike against India again. The Sooners’ star is four generations removed from the last full-blooded Native American in his family and his suburban rearing came with little exposure to American Indian culture.
