Not only the prestige of first second or other high finishes but also the inner-satisfaction of being a spiritual as well as physical part of a combined united American Indian week-long effort and activity motivates Ukiah and other runners preparing for the tortuous run up the Central California corridor from Palm Springs to Davis Calif. The 11 or so Ukiah runners named above represent not only the Pomo but Pueblo Apache Wylaki Chippewa and Karok tribal strains. They will meet at nightly en-route campfires and assorted pow-wows and tribal gatherings and compete against full or partial teams of Navajo Men Navajo Women Lakota-Sioux Vancouver-Canadian as well as the Black Wolf Gourd Dance Society Billy Mills Inter-Tribal Friendship House and other teams. Long-distance running and running in relays to bring messages from one point to another is nothing new in Indian lore.
